The author characterizes virtual Poincaré duality groups as follows: Let \(\Gamma\) be a finite presented group of finite (virtual) cohomological dimension. Then \(\Gamma\) is a (virtual) Poincaré duality group if and only if there exists a closed PL manifold \(M\) with fundamental groups \(\Gamma\) and universal cover \(\widetilde {M}\) such that \(\widetilde {M}\) is homotopy equivalent to a finite complex. A corollary results in striking out the word virtual.
