    A number of results concerning perturbation of unitaries \(u\) and \(v\) satisfying the commutation relations \[ uv= e^{2\pi i\theta} vu \tag \(*_\theta\) \] are obtained. For the standard (Schrödinger) pair of selfadjoint operators \(P\) and \(Q\) satisfying the canonical commutation relations \(PQ- QP=- iI\) on a Hilbert space \(H\), it is shown (Theorem 3.1) that for any infinite- dimensional Hilbert space \(K\), there exist commuting selfadjoint operators \(P_0\) and \(Q_0\) on \(H\otimes K\) such that \(P\otimes I- P_0\) and \(Q\otimes I- Q_0\) are bounded. (Such \(P_0\) and \(Q_0\) do not exist if \(\dim K<\infty\).) For the Voiculescu matrices \(S\) and \(\Omega\) in \(U(n)\) satisfying \(S\Omega= \omega \Omega S\), \(\omega= \exp (2\pi i/n)\), it is shown that, for an infinite dimensional \(H\), there exist commuting unitaries \(S_0\) and \(\Omega_0\) on \(\mathbb{C}^n \otimes H\) such that \(|S\otimes I- S_0 |\) and \(|\Omega \otimes I- \Omega_0 |\) are less than \(25n^{- 1/2}\). (Corollary 4.11). On an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space \(H\), it is shown that there exist two continuous paths \(u(t)\), \(v(t)\), \(0\leq t\leq 1\) in the unitary group \(U(H)\) on \(H\) such that \(u(0)= u(1)\), \(v(0)= v(1)\) and \[ u(\theta) v(\theta)= \exp (2\pi i\theta) v(\theta) u(\theta), \qquad \max \{|u(\theta_2)- u(\theta_1) |, |v(\theta_2)- v(\theta_1) |\} \leq C|\theta_1- \theta_2 |^{1/2}. \] (Theorem 5.4). It is shown that all the rotation \(C^*\) algebras \(A_\theta\), \(0\leq \theta\leq 1\) can be embedded in the Cuntz algebra \({\mathcal O}_\infty\) and thereby in every infinite simple \(C^*\)-algebra (Proposition 6.4).
