    The genus \({\mathcal G}(N)\) of a finitely generated nilpotent group \(N\) consists of isomorphism classes of finitely generated nilpotent groups \(M\) such that \(M_p \cong N_p\), for all primes \(p\), where \(M_p\) is the \(p\)-localization of \(M\). The author defines and studies a function \(\alpha_*:{\mathcal G}(N)\to{\mathcal G}(\widetilde{N})\) for \(N\), \(\widetilde{N}\) belonging to special classes. The construction of \(\alpha_*\) enables the author to prove that the genus of \(N\) is non- trivial in many cases and to establish non-cancellation phenomena relating to such groups \(N\).
