This volume contains selected papers from the Fifth European Workshop on Modelling Autonomous Agents in a Multi-Agent World (MAAMAW '93), held in Neuchatel, Switzerland, August 1993. The main topics of the papers from this workshop cover the emergence of global properties in a society of agents (game-playing strategies, fairness, planning behavior based on dynamic constraint programming), the emergence of social structures in multi-agent systems (coalition formation among autonomous agents based on utility notions from game theory, cooperation patterns as influenced by the structure of the organization), multi-agent planning (emergent constraint satisfaction through multi-agent coordinated interaction, planning in distributed and dynamic task domains such as job shop scheduling or transportation), multi-agent communication (speech act based cooperation protocols for multi-agent systems, conversation models based on mental states of the communicating agents, normative beliefs and normative goals), and multi-agent architectures (emergence of abductive reasoning capabilities in agents a multi-agent implementation and interaction language for autonomous, cooperative agents, design issues of adequate pursuit problems as testbeds for distributed AI based on the application of genetic algorithms).
