\textit{R. A. Toupin} [J. Rat. Mech. Analysis, 849-915 (1956; Zbl 0072.23803)] has substituted an equilibrium equation for the constitutive equation between polarization \(\mathbb{P}\) and electric field strength \(E\). The author claims that \textit{O. F. Mosotti} [Ac. Sci. Torino 22, 1-36 (1836); Memo Mat. Fis. della Soc. Ital. di Sci. Modena 24, 49-74 (1850)] by proposing the method of cavity established originally this electrical equilibrium equation.
