Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra and \(\widehat {\mathfrak g}\) denote the corresponding affine Lie algebra of type one. Let \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) and \(U_q (\widehat {\mathfrak g})\) denote the associated quantum groups. Let \(V\) be a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\). A finite-dimensional irreducible representation \(\widehat {V}\) of \(U_q (\widehat {\mathfrak g})\) is said to be an affinization of \(V\) if as an \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) representation, \(\widehat {V}\) contains \(V\) with multiplicity one and all other irreducible components of \(\widehat {V}\) have highest weights strictly smaller than that of \(V\). One of the authors has defined a partial ordering on the set of such affinizations. In this paper, the authors describe the minimal affinizations with respect to this ordering when \({\mathfrak g}\) is of type \(B_n\), \(C_n\) or \(F_4\).

Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebra and \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}\) denote the associated untwisted affine Lie algebra. It is known that any representation of \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}\) can be lifted to a representation of \(\widehat{\mathfrak g}\) via the evaluation homomorphism and such liftings are well understood. It is natural to ask the corresponding question for the quantum analogs \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) and \(U_q (\widehat{\mathfrak g})\), particularly for \(q\) generic. However, unlike in the classical case it is not usually possible to extend the action of \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) on any representation space \(V\) to that of \(U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak g})\) except when \({\mathfrak g}= sl_n\). In general, \(V\) needs to be enlarged suitably in order to be lifted to a \(U_q (\widehat{\mathfrak g})\) representation. To make the question more precise, the authors define a minimal affinization of a finite dimensional irreducible representation \(V\) of \(U_q({\mathfrak g})\) to mean an irreducible representation \(\widehat{V}\) of \(U_q (\widehat{\mathfrak g})\) which contains \(V\) as a \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\)-subrepresentation with multiplicity one, and such that all other irreducible \(U_q({\mathfrak g})\)-subrepresentations of \(\widehat{V}\) are strictly smaller than \(V\) with respect to a natural partial ordering on the set of isomorphism classes of representations of \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\). In this paper, the authors study the minimal affinizations of finite dimensional irreducible \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) representations where \({\mathfrak g}\) is an arbitrary simply laced algebra. The main result of this paper is the characterizations of minimal affinizations for \({\mathfrak g}\) of types \(D\) and \(E\).
