To help readers position the papers that follow in this issue of the NDJFL, and more generally, to give a first glimpse of the subject to novices wishing to enter the literature, the author provides a brief review of (a) the intuitive motivation behind to formal work, (b) the ``classical'' AGM account, and (c) some subsequent variants, alternatives, and extensions of the AGM account.
