Using an eddy-viscosity turbulence model and assuming that the depth-to-width ratio and the friction-to-bulk velocity ratio are both small, the author derives a two-dimensional horizontal dispersion equation for dilute particles in a shallow-water flow. During the scalings, no important terms describing the nonlinear regime are neglected. The nonlinear effects are shown to be significant only when the particle volume fraction is greater than ten parts per million.
