    The paper deals with nonlinear two-parameter Sturm-Liouville problems \(u'' + \mu g(u) = \lambda f(u)\) on \([0,1]\), \(u(0) = u(1) = 0\), where \(\mu, \lambda > 0\). For general nonlinearities \(f,g\), the existence of an \(n\)-th variational eigenvalue \(\lambda_n (\mu)\) is shown. To this end the Ljusternik-Schnirelman theory on the general level set developed by Zeidler is used. For the case \(f(u) = |u |^{q - 1} u\), \(g(u) = |u |^{p - 1} u\), an asymptotic formula for the first eigenvalue \(\lambda_1 (\mu)\) for \(\mu \to \infty\) is established. To obtain this result the problem \(- y'' = y^p - y^q\) on \(\mathbb{R}\), \(y > 0\) on \(\mathbb{R}\), \(\lim_{t \to \pm \infty} y(t) = 0\), is studied which turns out to be closely related to the given boundary eigenvalue problem for the above nonlinearities.
