We give an unambiguous definition of a certain class of admissible weak solutions of a linear functional equation (in the unknown function \(y(x)\)) \[ y(x)- ay (h (x))= f(x), \qquad x\in {\mathcal Q}. \tag{1} \] We give a method that makes it possible to find weak solutions of this equation and also to exhibit spaces in which a unique solution exists. The following is known about the parameters and functions occurring in (1): \(a\) is a real number different from zero; \(h(x)\) and \(f(x)\) are known mappings \(h: {\mathcal Q}\to {\mathcal Q}\), \(f: {\mathcal Q}\to \mathbb{R}\); and \({\mathcal Q}\) is a fixed subset of \(\mathbb{R}\).
