A survey of kinematics of finitely deformed bodies using tensor analysis on manifolds is presented. The theory is based on the constitutive assumption of the existence of a uniquely defined, isoclinic intermediate configuration, in the sense of Mandel, which leads to a unique multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into plastic and elastic parts, respectively. A constitutive theory is given for structurally isotropic materials, and the implication of the assumption that the elastic strains are small is investigated. The theory is applied to a body under simple shear with different formulations of the elastic constitutive model.
