The authors start with the observation that the Einstein vacuum equations can be expressed as a special self-duality condition for an \(O(3,1)\) Yang-Mills field soldered to the spacetime. They reformulate then the Einstein equations for an asymptotically flat spacetime in terms of two non-local quantities, a holonomy operator \(H\) and a so-called light cone cut function \(Z\). The new equations are lengthy and complicated, but provide some new insights. They are amenable to successive approximation.
