We consider domains in the complex plane bounded by a branch of a real algebraic curve which admits double valued reflection. Such domains are classified to a certain extent. Complexification leads to a pair of holomorphic involutions, intertwined by the anti-holomorphic involution, on either a rational or an elliptic curve. A study of this data leads to a systematic approach to finding explicit formulae for the Riemann map of the domain to the unit disc. This gives a new approach to the classical result of H. A. Schwarz for the ellipse, and also yields some apparently new examples of explicit Riemann maps for domains bounded by (branches of) real bicircular quartic curves.
