The authors study existence and asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions of the equation \[ \Delta u+K(x)u^q=0\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n,\quad n\geq 3.\tag{1} \] It is assumed that \(K\in C^{2+\alpha}\) is nonnegative and satisfies \(K(x)\leq C(1+|x|)^m\), \(m<2\) and that \(q\) is near critical, i.e. \(q=(n+2)/(n-2)\pm\varepsilon^2\). If \(K\) has a nondegenerate critical point \(x_0\) and \(n\) is large enough (depending on \(m\)), it is proved that, for every \(\varepsilon>0\), there exists a positive solution to (1) which is polynomially decaying as \(|x|\to\infty\). Moreover, these solutions concentrate at the point \(x_0\) for \(\varepsilon\to 0\). This result is obtained by comparing solutions of (1) with the solutions of the limit problem \[ \Delta u+u^{(n+2)/(n-2)}=0\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n, \] and using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction procedure.
