Summary: We generalize the notion of proximal contractions of the first and the second kinds and establish best proximity point theorems for these classes. Our results improve and extend recent result of \textit{S. Sadiq Basha} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 74, No.~17, 5844--5850 (2011; Zbl 1238.54021)] and some others.
