The paper under review defines the notions of Seshadri \(A\)-bigness and \(A\)-ampleness for a submanifold \(Y\) of a polarized manifold \((X,A)\). They are natural generalizations of [\textit{R.~Paoletti}, Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat., IX. Ser., Rend. Lincei, Mat. Appl. 6, No. 4, 259--274 (1995; Zbl 0874.14018)] and [\textit{L.~Bădescu}; \textit{M.~C.~Beltrametti} and \textit{P.~Francia}, Manuscr. Math. 92, No. 3, 369--388 (1997; Zbl 0899.14009)]. It is proved that Seshadri \(A\)-ampleness and also \(A\)-bigness put quite strong restrictions to the field of formal rational functions of \(X\) along \(Y\). Another main result of the paper is a criterion to distinguish Seshadri \(A\)-ampleness from Seshadri \(A\)-bigness. This criterion says that a Seshadri \(A\)-big submanifold is Seshadri \(A\)-ample if and only if it meets all hypersurfaces in \(X\). The authors also give many interesting examples.
