In 1869, \textit{J. Lüroth} [Clebsch Ann. 1, 37--53 (1869; JFM 02.0511.02)] proved that a nonsingular plane quartic curve containing the 10 vertices of a complete pentahedal contains an infinitely many such 10-tuples. Such curves, called Lüroth quartics, describe an open subset of an irreducible hypersurface \({\mathcal L}\) in the space \({\mathbb{P}}^{14}\) of all quartic curves. In 1919, \textit{F. Morley} [American J. 41, 279--282 (1919; JFM 47.0597.01)] presents an argument computing the degree of \({\mathcal L}\). In the present paper the authors develop the ideas of Morley to complete his original argument. The main outcome of the paper is the proof of the following result: The Lüroth hypersurface \({\mathcal L} \subset {\mathbb{P}}^{14}\) has degree \(54\) (Theorem 0.1).
