The author presents a method to fit a smooth surface on to a set of empirical values depending on two variables. The only hypothesis is that the probability distributions of the error follows the normal law. The most probable true values are determined by minimizing the sum of the \(r\)-th divided differences. The coefficients of the system of linear algebraic equations to be solved can be arranged in a block band matrix. He studies a new direct method for solving the system of linear equations and a small number of operations is required.
