The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mathematical structure of the coupled Maxwell-Lorentz system by means of a low-dimensional ``toy model'' which displays some of the main features of the general problem. To this end the authors develop a \((1+1)\)-dimensional model of self-interacting charges which will provide the basis of their further investigations. Since the model equations are nonlinear, of evolution type, and involve singular initial data the authors use the formalism of regularized derivatives in Colombeau algebras of generalized functions. The authors obtain existence and uniqueness result in this framework.
