The authors consider a new class of mappings that characterizes completeness of metric spaces. Namely, they introduce the \(F\)-Kannan mappings and show that a metric space \((Z,d)\) is complete if and only if each \(F\)-Kannan mapping on \(Z\) has a fixed point. Several examples showing the relation between this new class of mappings and other known classes are added. In particular, every Kannan mapping is \(\ln\)-Kannan, while there are \(F\)-Kannan mappings which are not \(F\)-contractions and \(F\)-contractions which are not \(F\)-Kannan.
