For the system of weakly nonlinear gas dynamics the authors consider the global in time entropy weak solutions for any periodic data with bounded total variation over each period. A modified Glimm approximate scheme is introduced. An estimate on the growth rate of the approximate solutions is obtained. Using the methods of approximate characteristics and approximate conservation laws, developed by \textit{J. Glimm} and \textit{P. D. Lax} [Decay of solutions of systems of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (1970; Zbl 0204.11304)], the authors prove that when the sound waves $\sigma_1$ and $\sigma_3$ possess a stronger total strength that the entropy wave $\sigma_2$, the effect of intrafamily wave cancellation would dominate the behavior of the solution, which would cause the decay of total strength of both waves. This decay effect provides the desired uniform a priory bounds for the solution.
