Neighborhood operators [\textit{S. J. R. Vorster}, Quaest. Math. 23, 404--416 (2000; Zbl 0974.18003)] are a generalization of interior operators introduced in [\textit{D. Holgate} and \textit{J. Šlapal}, Topology Appl. 158, No. 17, 2356--2365 (2011; Zbl 1232.54018)] as a dual to closure operators in a category \(\mathbf C\). Classically \(\mathbf C\) is endowed with an \((E,M)\)-factorization system and one deals with the partially ordered set \(Sub(X)\) of \(M\)-subobjects of \(X\in \mathbf C\). In this paper, for a finitely complete \(\mathbf C\), the authors adopt a lax approach defining a pseudo functor \(P: \mathbf C\to \mathbf Pos\) and working in the \(2\)-category of partially ordered sets and monotone maps. In this setting neighborhood operators are seen as lax natural transformations allowing calculations regarding them to become shorter and opening up a wider range of examples.
