This paper is concerned with positive solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation \[ -\Delta u +\epsilon u-|u|^{p-2}u+|u|^{q-2}u=0 \] where \(u\in H^1(R^N)\cap L^q(R^N)\), \(N\geq 3\), \(q>p>2\). It is known from previous work that for \(\epsilon>0\) sufficiently small, this problem has a unique solution (up to translations), which is radially symmetric. The focus of this work is a detailed study of the behavior of this solutions \(u_\epsilon\), as \(\epsilon\) goes to \(0\). It is proved that this behavior is different according to the value of \(p\). If \(2<p<2*=\frac{2N}{N-2}\) then a rescaled form of the solution, \(v_\epsilon(x)=\epsilon^{-\frac{1}{p-2}}u_{\epsilon}\left(\frac{x}{\sqrt{\epsilon}}\right)\), converges, as \(\epsilon\rightarrow 0\), to a limiting function which is a solution of the equation \[ -\Delta v + v-|v|^{p-2}v=0. \] When \(p>2^*\), the solutions \(u_\epsilon\) converge to a solution of the original equation, with \(\epsilon=0\). In the critical case \(p=2^*\), the solution, after a certain rescaling which depends on the dimensions \(N\), converges to an explicitly given function, which is a solution of an Emden-Fowler equation.
