Let \(C\) be a coalgebra over a field \(k\) and \(A\) a dense subalgebra of the convolution algebra \(C^*\) associated to \(C\). In the first section of this paper the author studies the closure by extension of the class of (finite dimensional) rational modules. It is shown that if the finite dimensional rational left \(A\)-modules are closed under extensions in the category of left \(A\)-modules then \(C\) is locally finite, i.e. for any two finite dimensional subspaces \(X\), \(Y\) of \(C\), the wedge \(X\wedge Y=\Delta^{-1}(X\otimes C+C\otimes Y)\) is finite dimensional. This property is related with the coreflexivity of \(C\) and the coradical filtration of comodules. In Section 3 the property of extension of rational modules is characterized, in particular left rational \(C^*\)-modules are closed under extensions if and only if products of closed ideals are closed and \(\text{Ext}^1_{C^*}(C_0,C)=0\), where \(C_0\) is the coradical of the coalgebra. Next, several sufficient conditions for this property are given. In the last section, the author investigates AT-algebras, topological algebras having a bases of neighborhoods of 0 consisting of two-sided ideals of finite codimension. When \(A\) is an \(\mathcal F\)-Noetherian finitary AT-algebra the property of closure under extension of left rational \(A\)-modules is equivalent to the closure under product of the set of left open ideals of \(A\). The paper finishes with interesting examples of these types of algebras and several open questions.
