Monoids are used in commutative ring theory to simplify the study of multiplicative properties of rings. However, the authors show by using rather simple examples that not all results concerning the multiplication in ring theory can be derived from monoids associated to rings. There are results depending on both the addition and the multiplication defining the ring under consideration.
