The paper is devoted to lower bounds for the number of limit cycles in a class of real planar systems having a linear center perturbed by a sum of continuous homogeneous vector fields. The proof is based on the application of the averaging first order method. Then the derived results are extended by the authors to some models where the smoothness is lost on the set \(\Sigma:=\{xy=0\}\). They also motivate to consider a variant of Hilbert's 16th problem, where the limit cycles number can be bounded in terms of the number of monomials of a family of polynomial vector fields involved in the perturbations, instead of doing this in terms of their degrees.
