Let \(T\) be a reduced projective curve over \(\mathbb{C}\), \(E\) a rank \(r\) vector bundle on \(T\) and \(V\subseteq H^0(T)\) a \(v\)-dimensional linear subspace, \(v>r\), spanning \(E\). The kernel bundle \(M_{E,V}\) is the rank \(v-r\) vector bundle on \(T\) which is the kernel of the evaluation map \(V\otimes \mathcal{O}_T\to E\). Suppose you fixed a nothion of (semi)stability for vector bundles on \(T\), that \(E\) is (semi)stable and that \((E,V)\) is sufficiently general in some moduli space of pairs. Is \(M_{E,V}\) (semi)stable? This paper studies the case in which \(T\) is chain-like, i.e. \(T\) has \(n\ge 2\), irreducible components, \(C_1,\dots ,C_n\), \(T\) is nodal with exactly \(n-1\) nodes and \(C_i\cap C_j\ne \emptyset\) if an only if \(i-j|\le 1\). There are several positive/negative results, e.g. that if \(M_{E,V}|C_i\) is semistable for all \(i\), then there is a polarization on \(T\) for which \(M_{E,V}\) is semistable.
