In this impressive paper, the authors are concerned with accurate Galerkin as well as collocation BEM solutions to a Dirichlet problem attached to the Laplace equation in interior and exterior 2D and 3D domains. As an absolute novelty, they provide functional error estimates for BEM independent of both discretization methods mentioned above. They also provide guaranteed upper and lower bounds for the unknown energy error. The upper error bound is based on the Dirichlet principle, while the lower error bound is based either on a variational problem in terms of a potential or a mixed problem in both 2D and 3D cases. These error estimates lead to an efficient adaptive mesh-refinement algorithm. Some numerical experiments carried out on 2D problems plainly confirm the theoretical results.
