Let \(M\) be a monoid generated by its squares, let \(\sigma:M\longrightarrow M\) be an involutive homomorphism of \(M\), and let \(\chi:M\longrightarrow\mathbb{C}\) be a multiplicative function such that \(\chi(x\sigma(x))=1\) for all \(x\in M\). The authors describe the \(2\times 2\) matrix valued solutions of the variant of d'Alembert's functional equation \[\Phi(xy)+\chi(y)\Phi(\sigma(y)x)=2\Phi(x)\Phi(y), \ x,y\in M\] in terms of multiplicative and additive functions and a variant of quadratic functions from of \(M\) into \(\mathbb{C}\). They apply their results to determine the solutions of the matrix symmetrized multiplicative Cauchy equation \[\Phi(xy)+\Phi(yx)=2\Phi(x)\Phi(y), \ x, y \in M.\] Finally, they obtain the continuous solution \(g: M\to \mathbb{C}^2\) of the mixed vector-matrix variant of Wilson's functional equation \(g(xy) + g(\sigma(y)x) = 2\Phi(y)g(x)\), \(x, y \in M\), where \(\Phi\) is a certain function.
