This paper is motivated by the famous work of \textit{D. S. Freed} et al. [Ann. Math. (2) 174, No. 2, 947--1007 (2011; Zbl 1239.19002)], which identified the twisted equivariant \(K\)-homology of a compact Lie group with the Verlinde ring of its loop group. This paper generalizes this work to the case of a noncompact semisimple Lie group \(G\), assumed to have torsion-free fundamental group. Let \(K\) be a maximal compact subgroup of such a group \(G\). Let \(\tau_G^G\in H^3_G(G,\mathbb Z)\cong H^3_K(K,\mathbb Z)\) be a twisting class for equivariant \(K\)-theory and let \(\tau_K^K\) be the corresponding twist for \(K\). For the compact group \(K\), the multiplication map \(K\times K\to K\) gives rise to the ring structure on \(K^K_\bullet(K, \tau_K^K)\), but the multiplication map on \(G\) is not proper and so one doesn't get a corresponding product on twisted equivariant \(K\)-homology of \(G\). Nevertheless, Theorem 2.3 of the paper shows that the ring structure on \(K^K_\bullet(K, \tau_K^K)\) induces an isomorphic ring structure on \(KK^G_\bullet(G/K, (G, \tau_G^G))\), which by Baum-Connes is isomorphic to \(K_\bullet(\Gamma_0(\tau_G^G)\rtimes G)\). Here \(\Gamma_0(\tau_G^G)\) is the algebra of sections (vanishing at infinity) of the Dixmier-Douady bundle on \(G\) defined by the twisting. The authors also give a description of the product in terms of correspondences, as in the work of \textit{A. Connes} and \textit{G. Skandalis} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 20, 1139--1183 (1984; Zbl 0575.58030)]. There are two appendices. The first appendix relates this work to the structure of the reduced group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C_r^*(G)\), following the work of \textit{A. Wassermann} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 304, 559--562 (1987; Zbl 0615.22011)]. (Reviewer's note: the authors appear to quote the wrong paper here.) The second appendix relates the main theorem to quantization of \(q\)-Hamiltonian manifolds with Hamiltonian group actions.
