In the last forty years, the study of approximation by sampling type operators (in linear and nonlinear cases) obtained a considerable attention. In particular, sampling type operators (in their multivariate version) can be used in signal and image processing. In this paper the authors establish quantitative estimates for nonlinear sampling Kantorovich operators in terms of the modulus of smoothness in the setting of Orlicz spaces. This is a very general frame which allows to directly deduce some quantitative estimates of approximation in \(L_p\)-spaces, \(1\leq p<\infty\), and in other well-known instances of Orlicz spaces, such as Zygmung and exponential spaces. Further, the qualitative order of approximation is obtained assuming \(f\) in suitable Lipschitz classes. The above estimates achieved in the general setting of Orlicz spaces are improved in the \(L_p\)-case, using a direct approach suitable to this context. At the end, the authors consider the particular cases of the nonlinear sampling Kantorovich operators constructed using some special kernels.
