    A Reynolds algebra is an associative algebra with an operator \(P\) with the following axiom: \[ P(u)P(v)=P(uP(v))+P(P(u)v)+P(P(u)P(v)). \] Various examples of Reynolds algebra are given, based on continuous functions or on polynomials. A weighted version of these objects is also introduced. The free Reynolds algebra on a given set is described, with the help of a particular family of bracketed words (or planar trees) which turns out to give a basis.
