The study of linkage (or liaison) theory goes back more than a century, in different guises, but has been a very active area of study at least since the 1970's. It began primarily as the study of linkage of ideals (using either complete intersections or using Gorenstein ideals for the links), and at the same time there has also been a scheme-theoretic point of view. It then progressed in the 1990's to the study of module linkage. The paper under review produces a new framework on which to perform linkage from the perspective of category theory, which generalizes the versions just mentioned. From this point of view, this paper defines linkage and gives the first results. It then explores the connections between linkage, homological dimension and duality. A number of interesting applications are given throughout the paper.
