Self-similar actions are associated to isomorphisms between proper parts of a given object. The notion was introduced by Nekrashevych, associated to properties of groups acting on rooted trees via finite automata. Nekrashevych associated a \(C^*\)-algebra to each self-similar group [\textit{V. Nekrashevych}, Self-similar groups. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2005; Zbl 1087.20032); J. Reine Angew. Math. 630, 59--123 (2009; Zbl 1175.46048)]. Lately, and related to Katsura's model for Kirchberg algebras in the UCT, Exel and Pardo extended the notion to self-similar actions of groups on (finite) graphs [\textit{R.~Exel} and \textit{E.~Pardo}, Adv. Math. 306, 1046--1129 (2017; Zbl 1390.46050)]. Inspired by both constructions, Laca, Raeburn, Ramagge and Whittaker [\textit{M.~Laca} et al., Adv. Math. 331, 268--325 (2018; Zbl 1392.37007)] extended the notion to actions of groupoids on woods of trees associated to finite graphs. In the paper under review, the author studies actions as in [\textit{M.~Laca} et al., loc. cit.] from Exel-Pardo's perspective. To this end, given such an action system \((G,E)\), he constructs a groupoid \(\mathcal{G}(G,E)\), and studies the associated \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*(\mathcal{G}(G,E))\) in terms of a Cuntz-Pimsner model; in the particular case of pseudo-free actions, it coincides with the (full) groupoid \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*(\mathcal{G}(G,E))\). Thus, the author extends some effort in generalizing results in [\textit{M.~Laca} et al., loc. cit.] to this context. Also, and related to the HK-conjecture of \textit{H.~Matui} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 104, No.~1, 27--56 (2012; Zbl 1325.19001)], the author makes specific computations about $K$-theory and homology for a particular example (Section~6). This paper is self-contained enough to be easily followed with no previous knowledge, and written in a reader-friendly style.
