This article is concerned with the construction of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q\) having high rank. As a survey of the previous results on this theme, the authors give two tables of the current rank records of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q\) and \(\mathbb Q(u)\) (\(u\): a variable) with prescribed torsion groups \(T\) respectively, where \(T\) are possible \(15\) torsion groups of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q\) determined by \textit{B. Mazur} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 47, 33--186 (1977; Zbl 0394.14008)]. An idea to obtain high rank elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q\) is to construct some families of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q(u)\) having high rank and to search sensible curves within these families by specializations of \(u\). They list various strategies for construction of families of high rank elliptic curves given by \textit{J.-F. Mestre} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 313, No. 3, 139--142 (1991; Zbl 0745.14013)] and \textit{S. Fermigier} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 322, No. 10, 949--952 (1996; Zbl 0861.11035)], Elkies and the authors and describe how to specialize parameters to obtain high rank elliptic curves. By using Diophantine triples, the authors construct families of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q(u)\) with \(T=C_2\times C_2\) of rank at least \(3\) and by sequential specialization they obtain subfamilies of rank at least \(4,5\) respectively and then with rank equal to \(6\). Here, \(C_n\) denotes the cyclic group of order \(n\). Further, they give a family of elliptic curves with \(T=C_2\times C_4\) having rank at least \(4\) and by specializations they find two new examples of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb Q\) with rank \(9\). This the present rank record for \(T=C_2\times C_4\).
