The authors consider a generalization of the inverse mean curvature flow for \emph{star-shaped hypersurfaces}, that is, surfaces that are graphs over the sphere. Specifically, they consider surfaces that move with speed \(u^\alpha f^{-\beta}\), where \(f\) is a positive function of the principal curvatures that is smooth, symmetric, and homogeneous of degree one, and where \(u\) is the normal component of the position vector, known as the \emph{support function}. The authors show, for \(\alpha\le0<\beta\le1-\alpha\), that the flow exists for all time, is unique and smooth, and converges in an appropriate sense to the flow of the round sphere. The authors' result generalizes the 1990 results of \textit{C. Gerhardt} [J. Differ. Geom. 32, No. 1, 299--314 (1990; Zbl 0708.53045)] and \textit{J. I. E. Urbas} [Math. Z. 205, No. 3, 355--372 (1990; Zbl 0691.35048)], who proved this result for surfaces moving with speed \(f^{-1}\), that is, for \(\alpha=0\) and \(\beta=1\). The authors' result also generalizes their previous work [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 148, No. 12, 5331--5341 (2020; Zbl 1459.53081)] to non-convex hypersurfaces. In this paper, the authors also prove the corresponding results for hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space. Additionally, they apply their results to provide an extension and a new proof of a result of \textit{P. Guan} and \textit{J. Li} [Adv. Math. 221, No. 5, 1725--1732 (2009; Zbl 1170.53058)] on quermassintegrals.
