Washek Pfeffer (1936--2021) was a Czech-born US mathematician and Professor Emeritus at the University of California in Davis. He was author of numerous books concerning the theory of integration, namely [Integrals and measures. New York, NY: Marcel Dekker, Inc. (1977; Zbl 0362.28004); The Riemann approach to integration: local geometric theory. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (1993; Zbl 0804.26005); Derivation and integration. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2001; Zbl 0980.26008); The divergence theorem and sets of finite perimeter. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press (2012; Zbl 1258.28002)]. He developed the `Pfeffer integral', an extension of Riemann-tye constructions for the integral of measurable functions to build a superset of the Lebesgue integrable functions. The paper under review does not give any biographical details but describes the mathematical developments by Washek head-on. A short history of integration theory from Riemann via Lebesgue to Henstock-Kurzweil is given. The paper then centers around the Gauss-Green formula where two questions have to be answered: what are the most general domains of integration allowed, and what kind of singularities of the vector field are allowed. Pfeffer eventually arrived at the `Gauss-Green-Pfeffer'' theorem which satisfyingly resolves many of the subtle problems encountered before.
