Recall that an ultrametric \(d\) on \(X\) is a metric satisfying the strong triangle inequality \(d(x,y)\le\max\{d(x,z),d(y,z)\}\). Set \(D(X)=\{d(x,y)\mid x,y\in X\}\). For two non-empty metric spaces \((X,d)\) and \((Y,\rho)\) a map \(\Phi:X\to Y\) is a weak similarity provided \(\Phi\) is bijective and there is a strictly increasing function (called the scaling function) \(\psi:D(Y)\to D(X)\) such that \(d(x,y)=\psi\rho(\Phi(x),\Phi(y))\) for all \(x,y\in X\). Descriptions of those ultrametric spaces \((X,d)\) such that for every weak similarity \(\Phi:Y\to X\) there is an ultrametric function \(f\) such that for all \(x,y\in Y\), \(\rho(x,y)=fd(\Phi(x),\Phi(y))\) are given. For example \(f\) can be taken as the scaling function \(\psi\) if and only if the components of \(\mathbb R^+\setminus D(X)\) ar either open or singletons.
