The authors rigorously prove the validity of the hydrostatic approximation (by the Navier-Stokes equations) for the primitive equations -- a fundamental model for geophysical flows. The system is considered in the domain \(\Omega={\mathbb T}^2\times(-1,1)\) with the no-slip (homogeneous Dirichlet) conditions. Under very general assumption on the initial data (belonging to a Besov space) an explicit estimate for the approximation error is given. The proof involves maximal \(L^p-L^q\) regularity results for the scaled Navier-Stokes equations, and an improved regularity for the vertical component of the solution to the primitive equations.
