The authors discuss the primitive equations \(\partial_t v+u \cdot \nabla v-\Delta v+ \nabla_H \pi = f\), \(\partial_z \pi=0\), \(\operatorname{div} u=0\), in \(\Omega \times (0,T)\) where \(\Omega =(0,1)^2\times (-h,0)\) with positive \(h\), \(\nabla\) is the three-dimensional gradient, \(\nabla_H\) is the two-dimensional gradient in \((x,y)\). The initial-boundary conditions are posed. The authors prove the existence of a unique global strong solution in \(L^p\). The exponential decay of the solution is established as \(t \to \infty\).
