The aim of the paper under the review is to study relative orbital integrals, which appear in the geometric expansion of the relative trace formula associated to a general class of symmetric subgroups of connected reductive groups. The author obtains several geometric results for symmetric spaces over a non-Archimedean local field. First a sort of the topological Jordan decomposition for symmetric spaces over a non-Archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic is obtained. Then the author obtains a relative version of the Kazhdan lemma, which has played an important role in the proof of Langlads-Shelstad fundamental lemma. The main application is provided in the case of Friedberg-Jacquet periods. Author develops a relative theory of endoscopy for symmetric spaces of the form \(\mathrm{U}(2n) / \mathrm{U}(n) \times \mathrm{U}(n)\), and proves the endoscopic fundamental lemma for the unit element of the spherical Hecke algebra.
