The authors prove an identity between period integrals of cuspidal automorphic representations and period integrals of residual representations for seven spherical varieties. Using Langlands-Shahidi theory, assuming non-vanishing of the relevant period integral, they deduce consequences for the attending automorphic \(L\)-functions such as non-vanishing at the central point \(s=1/2\) and having a pole at \(s=1\). The authors also discuss their results in light of the conjectural picture, due to Sakellaridis-Venkatesh, relating period integrals and \(L\)-functions for general spherical varieties, [\textit{Y. Sakellaridis} and \textit{A. Venkatesh}, Periods and harmonic analysis on spherical varieties. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (SMF) (2017; Zbl 1479.22016)].
