Given a polarized surface \((X,\mathcal{O}_X(h))\), a coherent sheaf \(\mathcal{E}\) on \(X\) is called Ulrich if \(\mathcal{E}\) is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay with the largest permitted number of global sections. A leading problem in the current theory of coherent sheaves on projective varieties is the construction of Ulrich bundles. Although it is easily shown that any curve supports an Ulrich sheaf, only a very partial picture is known for projective surfaces. In the paper under review, the author contributes to this problem proving that for regular smooth surfaces \(S\) (namely, \(h^1(\mathcal{O}_S)=0\)) embedded by a non-special very ample line bundle \(\mathcal{O}_S(h_S)\) satisfying some technical properties, an Ulrich bundle \(\mathcal{E}\) of rank \(2\) can be constructed on \(S\). Moreover, it is shown that \(\mathcal{E}\) is simple (namely, the only automorphisms are the homotheties) and special (\(c_1(\mathcal{E})=3h_S+K_S\)).
