The paper under review considers the maximal function on the Heisenberg group \(\mathbb H_n\), \(n\geq 2\), associated with a measure \(\mu\) of a surface \(\Sigma\) in a non-vertical hyperplane and the automorphic dilations. Under natural hypotheses on \(\Sigma\), the sharp range for \(L^p\)-boundedness, here \(p>2n/(2n-1)\), is obtained. In the case of the vertical planes, the spherical maximal functions on \(\mathbb H_n\) were considered in [\textit{A. Nevo} and \textit{S. Thangavelu}, Adv. Math. 127, No. 2, 307--334 (1997; Zbl 0888.22002)] with a sharp range by \textit{E. K. Narayanan} and \textit{S. Thangavelu} [Isr. J. Math. 144, 211--219 (2004; Zbl 1062.43016)], and with different methods closer to the present paper by \textit{D. Müller} and \textit{A. Seeger} [Isr. J. Math. 141, 315--340 (2004; Zbl 1054.22007)].
