The paper studies a periodic Kolmogorov system \[ \begin{aligned} \dot{x}_1&= x_1f_1(t,x_1,x_2), \\ \dot{x}_2 &= x_2f_2(t,x_1,x_2), \end{aligned} \] which describes two species nonlinear competition; where \(x_1, x_2\) represent the densities of two species and \(f_1, f_2\) are respectively the per capita growth rate of the first and the second species. The authors discuss the coexistence and extinction of one or both species, and describe the domain of attraction of nontrivial periodic solutions in the axes, under conditions that generalize Gopalsamy conditions [\textit{K. Gopalsamy}, J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. B 24, 160--170 (1982; Zbl 0498.92016)]. The obtained results are applied to a model of microbial growth and to a model of phytoplankton competition under the action of toxins.
