This expository paper ``gives an overview of some problems in the theory of groups rings with an historical perspective''. After a brief introduction, it starts in Section 2 with the basic definitions and facts about group rings, and continues in Section 3 with a general historical account of the subject from its very beginning (going back to the definition of abstract group), to the seventies. In Section 4 and 6, respectively, two of the fundamental problems (or series of problems) in the study of integral group rings of finite groups are presented: the isomorphism problem and the Zassenhaus conjectures. For both topics, treated from a historic perspective, a series of partial positive answers are collected, to conclude the respective section with definitive negative answers. Section 5 collects results relating group-theoretical properties of the unit group of the integral group ring of a group \(G\) with properties of \(G\), while Section 7 describes the non-associative analogue to group rings, the so called \emph{loop algebras}, and gives an account of how versions in this context of the mentioned problems and conjectures for group rings behave. The emphasis on the historical perspective, together with the exposition of non-associative generalization, confers this survey independent value from other recent surveys on units of groups rings, such as [\textit{L. Margolis} and \textit{Á. del Rio}, Adv. Group Theory Appl. 8, 1--37 (2019; Zbl 1443.16044)].
