Symplectic realizations of a Poisson structure, and the associated (local) symplectic groupoids were studied extensively by \textit{A. Coste} et al. [Publ. Dép. Math., Nouv. Sér., Univ. Claude Bernard, Lyon 2/A, 1--62 (1987; Zbl 0668.58017)] and \textit{M. V. Karasev} and \textit{V. P. Maslov} [Nelinejnye skobki Puassona. Geometriya i kvantovanie (Russian). Moskva: Nauka (1991; Zbl 0731.58002)]. For coordinate Poisson manifolds, it was shown that a (local) symplectic realization exists near the zero section of a cotangent bundle \(T^X\). The associated (local) symplectic groupoid structure can be defined by a generating function on the manifold \(X\). Further, every Poisson manifold integrates to a local symplectic groupoid. Integration to a global Lie groupoid is not always possible, as shown by \textit{A. S. Cattaneo} and \textit{G. Felder} [Commun. Math. Phys. 212, No. 3, 591--611 (2000; Zbl 1038.53088)] and \textit{M. Crainic} and \textit{R. L. Fernandes} [Ann. Math. (2) 157, No. 2, 575--620 (2003; Zbl 1037.22003)]. Finally, generating functions of local symplectic groupoids and their relation with Kotsevich's quantization have also been studied by \textit{A. S. Cattaneo} et al. [Commun. Math. Phys. 253, No. 3, 645--674 (2005; Zbl 1072.58008)]. The main result of the article is that every local symplectic groupoid \(G\) admits a generating function \(S_{\pi}\). Moreover, the deformation to normal cone of \(G\) has generating function \(S_{t\pi}\). The second result is that the Taylor expansion of \(S_{t\pi}\) at \(t=0\) recovers the formal generating function obtained by \textit{A. S. Cattaneo} et al. [loc. cit.]. The role of generating functions in the Poisson sigma model is clarified.
