The authors define the Fatou and Julia sets of transcendental meromorphic functions and the Speiser class \(S\) which consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions \(f\) for which the set sing\(( f ^{-1})\) of singularities of the inverses is finite. If \(q\) denotes the cardinality of sing\((f^{-1})\), then \(f \in S_q\). The authors prove the following: Theorem. Let \(d \in (0, 2]\). Then there exists a function \(f \in S_3\) such that the Julia set of \(f\) has Hausdorff dimension \(d\). It turns out that the above theorem is of particular interest when \(0 < d \leq 1/2\).
