Recall that a Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebra \((\mathfrak{g},\,[\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}},\,T)\) of weight \(\lambda\) is a \(3\)-Lie algebra \((\mathfrak{g},\,[\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}})\) equipped with a linear operator (Rota-Baxter operator) \(T\,:\,\mathfrak{g}\rightarrow \mathfrak{g}\) satisfying a certain compatibility condition, which involves the scalar \(\lambda\), with respect to the \(3\)-Lie bracket \([\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}}\). Similarly, a representation \((M,\,\rho,\,T_M)\) over \((\mathfrak{g},\,[\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}},\,T)\) is a representation \((M,\,\rho)\) over the \(3\)-Lie algebra \((\mathfrak{g},\,[\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}})\) equipped with a linear operator \(T_M\,:\,M\rightarrow M\) satisfying a certain compatibility condition. The present paper under review introduces a cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebras of arbitrary weights. Given a Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebra \((\mathfrak{g},\,[\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--},\,\mbox{--}\,]_{\mathfrak{g}},\,T)\) and a representation \((M,\,\rho,\,T_M)\) over it, the present paper introduces the \textit{cochain complex of Rota-Baxter operator} \(T\) with coefficients in \(M\), and shows that there is a chain map from the cochain complex of \(3\)-Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) with coefficients in \(M\) to this cochain complex. The authors define the \textit{cochain complex of Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebra} \(\mathfrak{g}\) with coefficients in \(M\) to be the mapping cone of the chain map described above. The motivation of their constructions comes from formal deformations. To be more precise, the infinitesimal of the \(1\)-parameter formal deformation of the Rota-Baxter operator \(T\) is a \(1\)-cocycle in the cochain complex of Rota-Baxter operator \(T\) with coefficients in the adjoint representation. While the infinitesimal of the \(1\)-parameter formal deformation of the Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) is a \(2\)-cocycle in the cochain complex of Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) with coefficients in the adjoint representation. In general, if \(M\) is a vector space equipped with a linear operator \(T_M\,:\,M\rightarrow M\), the authors show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the isomorphism classes of abelian extensions of \(\mathfrak{g}\) by \(M\) and the second cohomology group of the cochain complex of Rota-Baxter operator \(3\)-Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) with coefficients in \(M\). The paper also discusses the relation between skeletal Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie \(2\)-algebras and the \(3\)-cocycles in the cochain complex of Rota-Baxter \(3\)-Lie algebras.
