In the paper under the review, the authors study periods of automorphic representations of adele groups defined by integrals on Gelfand subgroups. Examples related to the classical periods considered by Hecke are discussed first. The authors provide a procedure of integration transforming the Whittaker period (the one defining a non-trivial Fourier coefficient along the horocycle) into the Whittaker period (the one against a Hecke character along the split torus of \(\mathrm{GL}_2\)). Then the authors provide a converse statement, integrating the Hecke period into the Whittaker one. After that, two Whittaker functionals and two unipotent periods for \(\mathrm{GL}_2\) are considered. The local integration procedure is introduced and it is shown how to regularize the global map using the adjoint \(L\)-function. Relation of the period map to special values of \(L\)-functions is also studied. It is shown that there is a natural map between Whittaker periods on different unipotent subgroups, and a non-trivial invariant of an automorphic represent of \(\mathrm{GL}_2\) is obtained. This invariant is computed in several cases, and the relevance of particular \(L\)-factors and Langlands \(L\)-functions in the proposed regularization procedure for two Whittaker functionals is discussed.
